In the fall of 1983, the Rex Foundation was established as a non-profit charitable organization by members of the Grateful Dead. The Rex Foundation aims to help secure a healthy environment, promote individuality in the arts, provide support to critical and necessary social services, assist others less fortunate than ourselves, protect the rights of indigenous people and ensure their cultural survival, build a stronger community, and educate children and adults everywhere. The National September 11 Memorial & Museum is a private not-for-profit (501c3), responsible for oversight of the design, raising the necessary funds, programming and operating the Memorial & Museum being built at the World Trade Center site. In the beginning of October 2006, the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, accepted the Chairmanship of the Foundation’s Board of Directors.
